Acrylic and sand on canvas

Size 950 x 950 mm

Midden Layers represents looking at the midden shells on the beach and seeing how if erosion exposes the midden shell mounds it would show all the different earth layers, charcoal, bones, burials, shells, wood, fire charcoal, foliage and many other items that were added to midden shells.

This painting was created using a mixture of sand, acrylics and glue to form a layering effect that represents the shells along a beach exposed by erosion and time.  Many objects can be seen in the mounds and many mounds could have been used for 1000's upon 1000's of years.

The white lines are the shells that show the erosion of beach shell mounds, layers of dirt, charcoal, wood, plants, vegetable and tree foliage. Along with bones of animals eaten and other objects that were of no use and stored in the mounds all contributed to this amazing layering effect that I tried to capture in this painting.
