A reflection on place

In 2022, Lexie Abel was the first artist commissioned through the City of Moreton Bay’s Art At Large program, creating a vibrant mural across the external wall of Redcliffe Museum. The program was developed to bring contemporary public art into everyday spaces across the region and create new ways for people to experience local places.

For Lexie, the work became a reflection on her own relationship with Redcliffe — a place where she spent much of her childhood and where she is now raising her own family.

The design draws particularly on memories of Queens Beach North and the beaches of the Redcliffe Peninsula. Rather than trying to literally reproduce the colours of the bay, Lexie approached the work through memory and feeling: the joy of being near the water, connection to place, and the way childhood landscapes stay with us as we grow.

Colour, movement and memory

Across the museum façade, looping lines move through fields of pink, orange and ochre, while repeated circular forms create rhythm across the architecture.

The scale of the mural allows the artwork to become part of the building itself. From a distance, its colour changes the character of the site; closer up, repeated marks, lines and layers become more visible.

The work sits comfortably within Lexie’s broader practice, where personal memory, family, identity and relationships to place often intersect.

Public art in everyday places

One of the strengths of public art is that people don’t necessarily have to enter a gallery to encounter it.

Located on the outside of Redcliffe Museum, Lexie’s mural became part of the everyday landscape — visible to museum visitors, families, people walking through the grounds and the broader Redcliffe community.

The City described the mural as the first project to launch its Art At Large program and as an homage to the Peninsula
